I received several questions that were similar and they basically boil down to this: How did I dream up the character of “Ryan” the serial killer? How could I possibly birth such a mad man? On a side note, thank you to those who expressed concern over the state of my own mental health, ha! I suppose that comes with the territory.
Ryan came to be out of a mixture of things. I don’t believe in art, which I believe that writing is, that anything is created by a single traceable blue print. Instead it comes about through a medley of experience, research, wonder and imagination. My journey began through research, both formal and informal. I studied Psychology at The University of Southern Mississippi with an emphasis in Forensics. My time at USM further awakened my curiosity of human nature and why some people commit heinous act such as the ones found in my works.
Next I moved on to private research where I learned more about true events and monsters such as Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy and countless others. I read and visited many places during my research. The initial Idea for the character of “Ryan” came to me one day while visiting one of my favorite cities New Orleans, my wife’s hometown. While in town I took a tour and heard a bit of Nola Folklore. There are many versions of the native New Orleans story, all of which are nothing more than fun fiction. They mostly have to do with a gruesome account of a murderous butcher. And so, that’s the day the wheels began to turn.
As I said in the beginning, the process is never simple and my works are the combination of a million tiny thoughts, glances or memories gone by.
“If there’s a book you really want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” ~Toni Morrison
